Kellog's Cheez-It Big Event, July 4, 2008 Instead of granite from the Black Hills of South Dakota, the profiles of presidents Washington, Jefferson, T. Roosevelt and Lincoln will be carved out of real cheese as part of the Cheez-It Big Cheese Tour. The 700 pound portable cheese version of our nation's first grand fromages, created by veteran cheese carver, Troy Landwehr, will help raise awareness of products made of 100 percent real cheese. Although cheese lovers will not be able to eat the Mount Rushmore cheese sculpture, they will be able to enjoy viewing this unique carving and can pick up a free favorite Cheez-It snack. 137-139 North 2nd Street Date Night at The Clay Studio, June 20, 2008. Perfect for couples and singles of all ages, these innovative, hands-on events are sponsored by the new Young Supporters of The Clay Studio initiative. Folks can try their hands at wheel-throwing, under the guidance of an instructor, while enjoying beer, wine and snacks and mingling with other like-minded, creative people. Stories about slavery in Philadelphia in the 1700s, when a majority of the African Americans in Philadelphia were enslaved will be woven into guided tours of “the Nation’s Church” Learn about famous Revolutionary-era leaders who worshipped here, including George Washington and Benjamin Franklin. The church is open for tours from 9:00 AM- 5:00 PM Monday through Saturday and on Sunday from 1:00 PM-5:00 PM. Guided tours throughout the day. The 20-minute guided tour of the burial ground will deal with the issue of slavery in Philadelphia and the stories of those who are buried in this historic burial ground including Benjamin Franklin and Benjamin Rush. Christ Church Burial Ground located at 5th and Arch Streets is open for tours Monday-Saturday 10:00 AM-4:00 PM and on Sunday from 12:00 PM-4:00 PM, weather permitting. Ticket sales, donations, card parties and bake sales all raised money to help rescue and restore the buildings and produce guidebooks, tours and souvenirs to help spread the message. Today Fete Day is a lively street fair featuring open house tours, music, craft demonstrations, kids' games and Philly favorite foods-hotdogs, soft pretzels and root beer floats! Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children. Mum's favorite heroes are back, this time in colonial Philadelphia, where they get caught up in the course of human events. In pursuit of happiness, they struggle for freedom against the English (bulldog) with the help from Betsy Ross' cat and the French (poodle). Snyderman Gallery & The Works Gallery 10th Annual Invitational Goblet Exhibition. July 3 - August 29, 2008. The exhibition will feature works by more than 40 national and international artists, and draws collectors, curators and artists from throughout the country. Curated by Frank Hopson, Director of the Works Gallery, it is one of the largest and most respected exhibitions of its kind in the United States. The direction to each of the invited artists is to push the limits of the goblet form into fanciful and technical feats of glass wizardry.
