Romeo and Juliet By William Shakespeare
Location: Arden Theatre Company F. Otto Haas Stage 40 N. 2nd Street
Time:
Description: Directed by Matt Pfeiffer
While the story of Romeo and Juliet has been in human consciousness for centuries, the Arden’s production challenges preconceptions of the play, stripping the story down to focus on characters and language. When Shakespeare’s company first presented Romeo and Juliet , they made use of the resources, knowledge and clothing of the time. The Arden’s production will bring a similar sense of familiarity and immediacy to the play, pairing modern fashions and contemporary compositions with handheld weapons and a simple stage reminiscent of Shakespeare’s Globe.
”The families in Romeo and Juliet deal with two extreme emotions – love and hate. In their world, violence ultimately comes at a cost. A play that holds hate to its consequence is always compelling,” says director Matt Pfeiffer. In addition to past work at the Arden on Wittenberg and Go, Dog. Go!, Pfeiffer has seen much success directing in the Philadelphia area. Notably, he has worked at Theatre Exile on Glengarry Glen Ross (David Mamet) and Bug (Tracy Letts). Pfeiffer’s skill in forging muscular, combustible performances will fuel this cast of acclaimed and familiar Philadelphia actors.
In the title role of Romeo, Evan Jonigkeit returns to the Arden after appearing in The History Boys. Jonigkeit previously played Romeo in Mauckingbird Theatre Company’s production of Shakespeare’s R&J. The production’s Juliet also recently tackled her role at Virginia Stage Company. Mahira Kakkar makes her Arden debut as Juliet, though she has previously worked with the Arden’s Producing Artistic Director Terrence J. Nolen in Opus at Primary Stages in New York City. Also making their Arden debuts in this production are Temple graduate Matt Lorenz as Paris and current Temple undergrad Sean Lally as Tybalt.
Ten actors in the Romeo and Juliet cast have previously worked at the Arden, including Scott Greer as Lord Capulet (Something Intangible, Candide, Assassins and the upcoming Sunday in the Park with George), Frank X as Lord Montague (The History Boys and Peter Pan, both this season), Anthony Lawton as Friar Laurence (The Seafarer, A Prayer for Owen Meany) and Brian Anthony Wilson as the Prince (Our Town, The Piano Lesson). Also returning to the Arden are Melanye Finister as Lady Capulet (A Midsummer Night’s Dream), Krista Apple as Lady Montague (Our Town), Suzanne O’Donnell as the Nurse (Dancing at Lughnasa, Hamlet), James William Ijames as Benvolio (James and the Giant Peach), and Shawn Fagan as Mercutio (Wittenberg).
The design team includes set designer Brian Sidney Bembridge (Go, Dog. Go!), costume designer Rosemarie E. McKelvey (Barrymore award winner for Something Intangible), lighting designer Thom Weaver (Blue Door, My Name is Asher Lev), and original composition and sound design by James Sugg (My Name Is Asher Lev, four Barrymore Awards for Outstanding Sound Design). The production team also includes fight director Dale Girard, who recently staged fights for Two River Theatre Company’s Macbeth, directed by Arden co-founder Aaron Posner.
The final dress rehearsal of Romeo and Juliet on Wednesday, February 24 at 8pm is open to the public as a Pay-What-You-Can performance, with all proceeds collected donated to Outward Bound, an organization which strengthens and empowers communities to effect positive change. All seats are general admission, first come, first served for this performance.
Romeo and Juliet previews begin on Thursday, February 25. Preview performances run February 25, 26, 27, 28 and March 2. Opening night is set for 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 3.
Romeo and Juliet has already been extended through April 11. The performance schedule includes numerous student matinees, which are sold to capacity.
Single ticket prices are $29- $48, with discounts available for seniors, students, military and educators. Groups of 10+ enjoy significant discounts; please inquire about group rates.
The Arden is wheelchair accessible and provides assisted listening devices and large-print programs at every performance. In addition, audio described and open captioned performances are scheduled for Saturday, March 27 at 8pm and Sunday, March 28 at 2pm. Reservations are required for accessible seating and programming and may be made by calling the Arden’s Box Office at 215.922.1122.

Opening Reception Fri March 5
Location: Twelve Gates Art Gallery
Time: 6:00-8:30 pm
Description: Prokash Karmakar
Prokash Karmakar was born in Calcutta, West Bengal in 1933. He grew up in a studio environment with his father, Prahlad Karmakar, a well-known and respected artist. To hone his skills, he studied at the Government College of Arts and Crafts in Calcutta, however when his parents died Prokash was forced to abandon his studies and join the army. He personally experienced the devastation of WWII, the great Bengal famine of 1943, and witnessed the holocaust of communal riots that culminated in the partition of India.
After leaving the army, Prokash returned to art and in an effort to earn a living from his work he began exhibiting in the streets. Not only did he go on to receive a scholarship to study in France, but he also received awards from the Lalit Kala Akademi, the Birla Academy of Art and Culture, and Rabindra Bharati University. He has held several exhibitions of his work in India and abroad. Collections of his work can also be found in places such as the Tata Institute of Art, Mumbai, the Lalit Kala Academy and the Modern Art Gallery in New Delhi.
Prokash’s acrylic and oil paintings are, in a way, remembrances of things past. Some of them are personal, other are recollected from nightmares rather than dreams, and some are from the darkest moments of human history. He is one of the few artists in India who used everyday disorder as a vehicle to express his feelings with visionary intensity. He also paints landscapes depicting lush tropical vegetation, hills and valleys, seascapes and mangroves in all of their wild diversity.
Prokash Karmakar currently resides and works in Howrah.

Her work is included in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University, DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park and Yale University Art Gallery. Jill O’Bryan spends half the year in New York and other half in Santa Fe, NM. O’Bryan will show the largest drawing in the show, a graphite drawing132 x 80 inches. HPP is currently coordinating with The Haitian Coalition of Philadelphia, the Haitian Clergy of Philadelphia, Beyond Boarders, the Mayor’s Office, Temple Haitian Student Association, University of Pennsylvania Haitian Student Association, Congressman Brady’s office, Philadelphia Young Democrats, political officials and other Haitian organizations in the surrounding area to devise a plan to provide assistance to Haiti. Frequent updates will be made to the site, so please check back often. In the meantime, if you wish to provide assistance we urge you to do the following:
Supplies Needed
· Make a monetary donation to the Haitian Relief Fund via paypal. All funds will go towards purchasing of items that must be bought in Haiti to defray shipping cost as well as medical supplies.
· Purchase or bring cots and tents that will be instrumental in providing temporary shelter to those who have been displaced. (We will update our site with drop off locations shortly)
· Medical supplies such as band aids, alcohol, peroxide, etc.
· Water and non-perishable food items. (We will update our site with drop off locations shortly)
· Generators and Industrial supplies for building will be needed for rebuilding.
· Supplies for children such as diapers, baby clothes, wipes and bottles are of great need as well.
· Call elected officials in your area and ask them to partner with HPP.
· We will also update the site with a community guide to organizing Haiti relief efforts.

The Sky Below-screening of the award-winning documentary
Location:
Twelve Gates Gallery
Time:
6:30 pm

THE SKY BELOW is a contemporary exploration of the creation of Pakistan and the 1947 Partition of the Indian Subcontinent, weaving together 5000 years of culture, while investigating the lingering after-effects of this six-decade old political divide, most tragically witnessed by Kashmir. With her life in the hands of strangers and sometimes gunmen, Singh traveled from the desert of Kutch to the snowy mountains of Kashmir; and from the seaside city of Karachi to the spare but volatile terrain of the Khyber Pass.

New Year’s Eve! at The Tin Angel
Location:
Tin Angel
Time:
Description:
Thursday, December 31
Steve Forbert
If you haven’t made New Year’s Eve plans, we humbly suggest Tin Angel is the place to be—Serrano will be offering a fantastic $85-per-person special prix fixe menu for the evening, and Steve Forbert will be starting off the new year with some rock n’ roll style.
Anointed “the new Dylan” upon his recording debut in 1978—with all of the necessary Romantic backstory (quitting his job as a truck driver and moving to New York City at age 21 to play for spare change in Grand Central Station) and baggage—Steve Forbert is probably best known for his hit single “Romeo’s Tune,” which appeared on his second record, Jackrabbit Slim in 1979. “I made my own mistakes,” Steve admits about those early years, “and I did a damn good job of it. But that was a very difficult time. I was in limbo, and it took me years to get out of it.”
Of course he got out of it: Forbert has continued to put out stellar records, like 2007’s Strange Names & New Sensations and his recent follow up album, The Place and The Time.

Seen easily along Philadelphia’s waterfront at Penn’s Landing at 6:00 p.m. and Midnight, this year’s productions will weave a tapestry of color choreographed to different types of music. Each music track for each production will be simulcast on KYW Newsradio 1060 and KYW-HD and are scored to evoke hope in the upcoming New Year. The Midnight fireworks show will also be broadcast live on CBS 3, along with a special pre-show live from Penn’s Landing for the entire region to enjoy.
Tickets to the Party on Ice are only $30 for skaters and $20 for spectators.
