Celebrate the season in America’s most historic square mile with Historic Holiday Nights in Old City, presented by Old City District.

 

Carolers, History Makers and a Tree Lighting Ceremony will signal the start of the holiday season in Old City, Philadelphia on Thursday, November 30. The kickoff celebration will take place at the Betsy Ross House courtyard (239 Arch Street) and will feature Betsy Ross, carolers, and the new Old City District Design TreeFezziwig’s Sweet Shoppe will offer seasonal sips and snacks, including their famous kettle korn.  There will also be cider sampling by Austin EastCiders. (Must be 21 years of age or older).

 

At 5:30 p.m., the Philadelphia Youth Ballet will present excerpts of the holiday classic The Nutcracker. 

 

At 6:00 p.m., the Tree Lighting Ceremony will begin. The Old City District Design Tree is an artistic lighting installation designed by FK Productions, and celebrates the season with a nod to the neighborhood’s strong history of art and design. 

 

Visitors can enjoy $1 off admission at the Betsy Ross House, which will offer extended hours until 8:00 p.m. 

 

Tippler's Tour: Yuletide Cheers & Beers will also begin at the Betsy Ross House at 5:30 p.m. Travel back to the winter of 1777 to enjoy festive ales and libations with a British soldier, as he provides a unique perspective on this tumultuous time in Historic Philadelphia. (Must be 21 and over with valid identification.  Tickets must be purchased in advance at historicphiladelphia.org.)

 

Elfreth’s Alley, America’s oldest residential street, will also offer extended visiting hours from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. (126 Elfreth's Alley).

 

The Snowflake Shuttle powered by PHLASH will offer FREE rides Thursdays- Saturdays 6PM-9PM throughout Philadelphia’s Historic District! 

 

As part of Old City District’s Historic Holiday Nights, start a magical new holiday tradition by coming to see “Illuminating Liberty," the Museum of the American Revolution’s colorful new window illuminations, inspired by Philadelphia artist Charles Willson Peale. The window illuminations will be on display nightly from November 30 through the New Year.

 

In addition, get all of your holiday shopping done in one place, and enjoy some seasonal dishes and sips in Old City! More than 50 participating boutiques, shops, art galleries, museums, restaurants and cafes around the neighborhood will treat visitors to special sales, discounts, promotions and menu items every Thursday from 5:00 to 8:00p.m., November 30th through December 28th.

Dec. 14 - Comprised of various talented jazz artists, Mélange Jazz Collective is a versatile and creative Philadelphia ensemble that works in the World Beat, Blues, Funk and Jazz scenes.  Featured artists performing on December 14 Historic Holiday Nights in Old City: saxophonist, Laurent Bass; bassist, Bert Harris; percussionist, Karen Smith. 6:00-7:30pm. 

Dec. 21 - Join Jupiter Blue for a holiday celebration, as they sleigh into town with a sled filled with Holiday cheer. Jazzy Christmas singing and Holiday music to set your fireplace a glow and make your eyes sparkle with the warmth of the season! Vocalist Tara Middleton, Guitarist D.M. Hotep, Percussionist Tom Lowery, 6:00 p.m.

Dec. 28 - V. Shayne Frederick is a pianist, vocalist, arranger and musical director with over a decade of stunning performance. The au courant crooner has been featured in sold out performances at museums, art galleries, jazz clubs, casinos, and festivals here and abroad. Cited by the Broad Street Review as “one of the region’s busiest and best jazz singers,” and by All About Jazz as “one to watch” and a “shining light,” V. Shayne makes each song his own. 5:30pm

Making Christmas: How German Immigrants Shaped an American Holiday

The Elfreth's Alley Association presents: “Making Christmas” a pop up exhibition that will take visitors through a historic tour of German American Christmases Past on display in the Museum Houses (124 and 126). In the 1700s, the majority of colonists did not celebrate Christmas.  This changed throughout the 1800s. Experience firsthand how Santa Claus, the Christmas tree, Christmas cookies, toys and the influence of retail all became a part of the celebration in America By 1870 Christmas was Established as a National Holiday.  

 

Open to the Public - Thanksgiving through New Year's Eve, Saturdays and Sundays 12:00-4:00pm, & Thursday evenings, November 30th, December 7th, 14th, 21st 5:00-8:00pm. Closed to the public December 2nd.  Admission $5.
