-year-round, rain or shine – most of Old City’s galleries, studios, shops and restaurants open their doors for First Friday, an epic exhibition of the neighborhood’s vibrant arts scene.
In 1991, a group of art galleries, design showrooms and performance art spaces launched First Friday to introduce Philadelphia to the changing neighborhood as well as to the artists and designers who were reinvigorating Old City. The Old City community, which grew to include galleries of all kinds, as well as theater companies, artists’ cooperatives, workshops, schools, dance companies, design showrooms, and historic and cultural museums, continues to host this monthly organic cultural event.
Twenty five years later, Old City is a nationally recognized arts destination, named as one of the country’s top ArtPlaces by the ArtPlace Foundation and Philadelphia’s premier arts district.
