OCD Board Statement on July 5, 2020 Incident
At its board meeting of July 15, 2020, the Old City District Board of Directors adopted the following statement on an incident that took place on July 5, 2020 in Old City:
"Old City District (“OCD”) is aware of the incident that took place outside Infusion Lounge on Sunday, July 5th, during which a bar owner drew a gun on an individual. The Philadelphia Police Department is currently conducting an investigation into the incident and OCD is cooperating with that investigation. As a matter of policy, OCD does not comment on pending criminal investigations.
"The fulfilment of OCD’s mission includes supporting and sponsoring public safety measures to help ensure the safety and well-being of everyone living in, working in, and visiting Old City. The safety of Old City’s stakeholders, including residents, business and property owners, and visitors, is paramount. We strive to create an environment that is welcoming and comfortable for all.
"It is irresponsible, however, to ignore the optics and implications of this incident in the context of recent events highlighting ongoing racism against people of color. OCD is thankful that no gun was fired, no blood was shed, and no lives were lost during this confrontation; but we have seen similar incidents play out across the country with horrific outcomes. Acts of self-defense aside, the threat of violence is violence, and we do not condone it.
"OCD affirms that Black Lives Matter. Old City will thrive only when we can sustain an inclusive environment welcoming to all, including people of color. We are committed to achieving that goal."
