Museum for Art in Wood presents First Friday Opening for ‘Mark Sfirri: La Famiglia’
The Museum for Art in Wood hosts a First Friday Opening for ‘Mark Sfirri: La Famigila,’ the first museum-organized solo exhibition by celebrated artist and woodturner Mark Sfirri. The highly personal exhibition of new and never-before-seen work offers different approaches to questions of lineage, traversal, and the experience of belonging: biological families vs. selected families; species and identities; and familial strife and unconditional love, support, and dysfunction. La Famiglia represents a coming to terms with generational passing through Sfirri’s adoption of a spontaneous, “flow state” approach in his wood turning, carving, and surface processes.
In addition to new works by Sfirri, the exhibition features a collaborative project that includes the work of 45 artists and colleagues who were asked to contribute a two-dimensional artwork depicting an “immigrant” of their choice, whether a person or an idea. Remarks from Sfirri, curators, and Museum for Art in Wood staff will be presented at 6:30 p.m. After exploring ‘La Famiglia,’ visitors are encouraged to peruse the Museum Store for books, toys, original artwork and jewelry, unique furniture, and one-of-a-kind objects by some of the best artists and makers working in wood.
