The exhibition title is named after the song Tin Tin Deo released in 1951 and most famously associated with the Afro-Cuban jazz trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie. Raymond Saá draws inspiration from a variety of unexpected wonders that he encounters daily to create his intricate works. Influenced by his Cuban roots, Saá reflects on the complex harmonic and rhythmic layers of Afro-Cuban jazz music along with the impact of the rich social mixture of Cuban culture, which is largely an amalgamation of African and Spanish influences. Raymond Saá’s experimental new works in Tin Tin Deo represent an evolution in his practice. In his embrace of the chaotic, Raymond meticulously cuts, reassembles, and sews paper or canvas fragments into larger surfaces. During this process, he cogitates on the geometric and formal order intrinsic in nature. In such a way that the natural world has become a tool of endless resources of insight, a place of peace and dependability he can return to. He creates a network of oscillating shapes or cutouts that crisscross the surface with a palpable force, reminiscent of innovative in vogue textile patterns that we can all see in today’s runway looks. In our Project Room, Raymond is investigating and interpreting the dimensionality of Latin jazz music via a sculptural installation titled Tin Tin Deo. As he expands the boundary of materials and creative expressions, the artist hopes to offer to visitors a sensory experience. Through this complex creative journey, Raymond Saá produces enchanting and beautiful works which lull us to fabricate a mental picture associated with two opposite emotions, serenity, and dynamism. Raymond Saá (b. 1972, New Orleans, LA) received his BFA at the Maryland Institute College of Art, and his MFA at the Parsons School of Design. He has exhibited at Untitled Art Miami Beach ‘21; White Columns, New York, NY; Queens Museum, Bulova Center, Queens, NY; Drawing Rooms, Jersey City, NJ; Chautauqua Visual Arts Gallery, Chautauqua, NY; Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara, CA; Islip Museum, Islip, NY; Hunterdon Art Museum, Clinton, NJ; and more. His work is in the permanent museum and institutional collections: Pérez Art Museum, Miami, FL; New Orleans Museum of Art, LA; Queens Museum of Art, NY; NYC Public Art in Public Schools, NY; US Department of State, Art in Embassies, Matamoros and Tiawana American Embassies, Mexico, as well as in numerous corporate and private collections.
