Visit to the Independence Seaport Museum

As part of its 2025 Fall Training Program, "19th Century Growing Pains or We The People... Now What?", the Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides (APT) is offering a Visit to the Independence Seaport Museum (https://phillyguides.org/event/skills-building-finding-a-storyline-for-…), Sunday, November 16 from 11 am - 12 pm. The group will walk over together following the morning's panel discussion; those not attending the morning discussion can meet us at Philly's Gourmet Steaks at 10:30 am to walk over with us or meet us at the museum at 10:45 am.

While attendees will be able to visit all of the exhibits in the museum, we will mostly focus our attention on the museum's second floor exhibit, "Tides of Freedom: African-American Presence on the Delaware River." This exhibit was curated by Dr. Tukufu Zuberi, one of our speakers for the morning discussion on the parallel lives of James Forten and Stephen Girard. Focusing on four critical periods in Philadelphia’s history: Enslavement, Emancipation, Jim Crow, and Civil Rights, "Tides of Freedom" urges visitors to think about the concept of freedom both historically and in today’s world through the lens of the African experience along the Delaware.

This event is included in the complete package. To purchase a ticket individually, the cost is $5 member/ $10 non-member. It is such a wonderful under-the-radar museum; we used special pricing to make sure as many people as possible have the chance to visit it. Regular admission is $23.

Check out the complete training program description to figure out the best combination of events and pricing for you. The full package of a possible 9 events PLUS a full day bus tour to Fairmount Park is ($100 member/ $150 non-member), or you may prefer to choose individual tour or lecture events ($15 member/$25 non-member) with or without the full bus day ($50/$70).

Non-members may wish to join APT (https://phillyguides.org/apt-membership-2/) - early bird pricing is in effect through December 31 - to receive the member discount.

This museum is truly a hidden gem in Philadelphia. Join us to check it out!
