New Works by Natalie Hope McDonald

THANK YOU FOR SHOPPING is Natalie Hope McDonald’s newest exhibition featuring both abstract paintings and word-based two- and three-dimensional pieces. All of the art has been created within the year. The title is inspired by the idea of art as a commodity, a business that thrives when it’s valued. It also borrows from the Pop Art idea that anything can be art.

This is the first time Natalie has shown large-scale paintings in a Philadelphia gallery in many years. The newest works, a few of which are diptychs, reflect her experiences in cities like Philadelphia and New York. They are abstract maps of journeys and places, both vivid and at times chaotic, reflecting the way she “sees” sound and “hears” and “feels” color. The practice of using two canvases to create one large piece reflects the duality of her experiences that are both highly energetic and autobiographical. For these new works she has embraced the idea of overstimulation using color and texture, with references to street art.
